Do optical shops always fix eyeglasses for free?

I had pads on my eye glasses fall out after ski goggle removal. The optical shop took 5 minutes and put new pads in, cleaned my glasses, and gave them back to me. They said I didn’t owe them anything. I feel absurdly greatful (not enough however to buy glasses from them – I get mine over the internet). Should I have offered a tip? What’s the etiquette of such transactions? Thanks!

I do not think a tip was necessary. Just let them know how much you appreciate it. This is a fairly common “Good Will Gesture” by optical shops. Most of the time, they do not know that you are not there customer. Also, helping others with minor adjustments like that is a way to get new customers.
